Welcome!

You all know that I read a lot of parenting magazines.  I subscribe, as many of you do, to just about every single one.  I also get a few grown-up ones.  Recently, I’ve noticed that there is a theme:  They all seem to talk about losing the baby weight.   Now, I’ve had 2 kids in as many years, and I can tell you, it’s not that easy!  I don’t know about you, but I don’t really have that much extra time and energy to devote to exercise.  Mine usually consists of lugging a 7-month-old (who weighs almost as much as my 2-year-old) around chasing a toddler.  Were you to do this in a gym, they would probably give you a medal for the most difficult workout ever!

I, like most of this country’s population, was never thin.  I look back at photos from high school with envy of my body – no tummy, great legs, thin arms.  Of course, if you’d have asked me then, I would have said I was fat.  Since then, I discovered that I’m not one of the naturally skinny people.  And a few years ago, I became OK with it.  It wasn’t an overnight revelation; it took a lot of soul searching to realize that I was still smart, and could still be beautiful even if I wasn’t a size 8 (which I haven’t been since before puberty!)

Then came the girls.  Both my pregnancies were easy.  I’m one of the fortunate ones who had easy deliveries and recoveries.  A nurse in the hospital after I had Abby wondered who the patient was when she walked in.  I felt good about that.  I have been back down to my pre-pregnancy weight by my 6-week follow up appointment both times.  Of course, my pre-pregnancy weight is higher than the doctors would like.  And my body shape is quite different now that before kids.  But that’s OK, too.

But there will always be those people who like to burst your bubble.  Three weeks after having Abby, when Ella was about 18 months old, I met someone new.  She didn’t know about Abby yet, and she said I looked great for just having a baby.  The baby she meant was Ella.  A year and a half earlier!  I didn’t know whether to be flattered or offended!  Fortunately, I was comfortable with my shape at that time and graciously said “Thank you”.

So, here’s what I think:  They should start advertising something new.  DON’T lose the baby weight!  Be comfortable in your skin.  Accept the belly pouch for what it is – a badge of honor.  Just like your stretch marks and the circles under your eyes, they’re reminders of your children.  Embrace them, enjoy them, LOVE THEM!  I love mine!
